How long do air conditioners last?

A regularly serviced air conditioner can last 10 years or more. How do you know how long yours will last? Check your product manual or ask the friendly team at Aaerfusion, the manufacturers often give an estimate of the expected life span in their manual. The length of their life cycle depends on how much you use your air conditioner, the climate you live in and the model you bought.

Generally speaking, your air conditioner will not suddenly stop working, it will give you warning signs it’s fading. Here are the top 5 warning signs that you may need to repair your air conditioner, or replace it.

1. It’s not cooling your home

If you’re becoming frustrated because there’s not enough cool air coming out of your air conditioner, this is an obvious sign your unit is struggling.

2. Your energy bills are getting bigger

An unexplainably large electricity bill can be very upsetting. On your electricity bill, most companies list a comparison of your usage from the same period in the previous year. If your bill appears to be more than usual and you’re not sure why, consider doing an energy audit to work out if your air conditioner isn’t working efficiently anymore.

3. Something strange is happening

If there are any suspicious smells, unexplained moisture or funny noises when you turn your air conditioning unit on, it may need fixing or replacing. Here are some possible scenarios:

  • Odd smells – a filter may need to be replaced or the system may need cleaning.

  • Loud operating noises - the fan might not be working, a part might have become loose or a part might need to be cleaned.

  • Moisture inside the house – could mean various things and needs to be looked at immediately

4. The temperature is unreliable

If you’re confused why the air conditioner isn’t responding to the setting you have it at, or the temperature isn’t consistent, it may be a sign you need to repair or replace your unit.

5. You’re frustrated by excessive repairs

We recommend servicing your air conditioner every 6 to 12 months based on how often you use it. Depending on the quality of the model, there may occasionally be additional services or repairs. However if you find you’re repairing your unit several times a year, it may be more economical in long run to replace your unit. We can help you weigh it up, and have years of experience replacing old air conditioning units with new, quality brands.

Could the problem be the gas?

Many people assume when their air conditioner isn’t performing well, it’s something to do with the gas. Gas is generally the most unlikely scenario, your system should never leak or lose it’s gas charge. If it has it can turn into a major problem. the leak needs to be detected and repaired before any “Topping up” of gas can occur. this can turn into a rather lengthy process when done correctly as per Australian Standards. There are strict Laws in place to protect not only the customer and technicians but also, most importantly our atmosphere and environment. If a leak in a system does occur it can be time for consideration about getting a new system, as the repair prices is expensive. also, there are new refrigerants in play and much more energy efficient systems to cope with modern day living.
